When I was younger I only ever watched cycle 19 of America’s Next Top Model growing up, but recently I just started watching the entire series online. Almost everything about the treatment of these contestants by Tyra Banks, the judges, and her producers, is absolutely disgusting, especially in regards to the intelligent, eloquent, and/or well-educated young women with dark skin…How was this show ever allowed on television? At the same time, though, everything about it that’s completely awful makes it addicting to watch…It’s like a train wreck you can’t look away from.

Nope. Even if she deserved it (which she didn’t), I doubt Tyra would crown a “baby Tyra” as a winner on any cycle.

Thoughts:

Upon my rewatch, I truly grasped how inconsistent Kesse. She started off with a FCO and then plummeted to the bottom, then resurfaced during the commercial week before worsening again until her elimination. I would have kept her another week just for the sake of getting rid of Robin, but she had run her due course, truth be told. Personality-wise, I enjoyed Kesse thoroughly. She was sweet and charming, and a pleasant presence on the show. I don’t have much else to say about her.

So it appears that Tyra doesn’t give the first photo to the best of the week in the first season, so I’m gonna decide who I thought was the best. 

In the first episode, I’d say Kesse had the best photo and in the second episode I’d say Elyse had the best photo.

01. Kesse

Kesse totally nailed the first photoshoot and was deserving of first call out in my opinion. Her eyes are burning straight through the lens and it grabs immediatly the viewer’s attention. Her body is  bangin’ and the pose is doing favor to the product being sold (she somewhat looks plus sized here to me (?), but that doesn’t make her shapes look any less exquisite honestly). I love the relation between the dark background and her, it seems like she’s absorbing the light from the set, putting her to the center of the attention.

#2 - Cycle 1′s Snake Beauty Shoot

In terms of an editorial point of view, this is probably the most successful and iconic photoshoot in the first ten cycles. It produced some of the best photos of the cycle, including everyone bar Robin and Giselle’s best photos on the show, and even then it was a close call with Giselle. I think the fact each concept was wildly different made stand out. The photos didn’t blur into each other, but they were linked together by the snakes, forming some kind of cohesion that is really needed for a good photoshoot. If there was ever a photoshoot that I would wanted repeated as a carbon copy it would be this, specially given it being in the first cycle. Would have been nice to see some linking back to the original venture.

Close-ups of Kesse’s infamous Reebok shot, as seen in Cycle 8. Hilariously, they showed this photo when Tyra was arguing that she could see resemblance between herself and Kesse but not between her and Felicia.

5. Kesse

This is a decent picture of Kesse and the only reason it’s in my bottom 2 is simply because the other girls all did better. I don’t like how all of her limbs are amputated, but that’s more on how the shot’s framed. Her face has a lot of energy which fits the brief for the photoshoot.
